The Dewings - Seafarer’s Ministry

After serving as missionaries in the Philippines for 27 years and for several years in Malta, Chuck and Joan Dewing began a seafarer’s mission at the Port of Tampa, Florida, which spans 40 miles. In their role as port chaplains, they regularly visit container ships, car carriers, oil tankers and cruise ships. In these visits they make Bibles and Christian literature available to the crews, and encourage the Christian seafarers to start a Christian fellowship if one is not yet available to the crew. They also man two seafarer’s centers to meet the needs of the crews in port. Says Chuck, “We are excited at what the Lord is going to do in 2022.  We try to witness to seafarers and encourage the Christians to serve the Lord on their ships.”

Connie Curilla- Haitian American Friendship Foundation

As a young adult, Connie responded to the call to serve overseas as a missionary. She was originally headed to serve in the central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. However, further counsel led her to decline that post, and following 5½ months of vision clarification and searching for a new mission posting, the position of Animal Science teacher at the Haitian American Friendship Foundation (HAFF) came to her attention.

After training in the Washington, DC area, Connie moved to HAFF in central Haiti. She spent the next 25 years serving HAFF in many different roles – English, Science and Learning Skills teacher, field bookkeeper, co-founder and co-coordinator of the Godly Woman class and member of the management team, later the executive team. She also ran the eyeglass clinic. In every role, opportunities abounded for sharing the gospel with individuals and groups.

In 2011, on her return to the US for a summer of reporting to supporters, she came down with Hepatitis A. It took 9 months for her liver to heal and another year to determine that her continued fatigue and concentration issues were no longer due to the hepatitis. The cause has still not been determined, although she is much improved from that time.

While Connie was recuperating at her home in central Pennsylvania, various individuals involved in the US administration of HAFF were retiring. Connie took on as many of the roles as she could and is still serving HAFF today in US Administration. She has also been given the title of HAFF Historian as she is one of the longest tenured members of the HAFF staff.

Connie’s tasks today include assisting the executive director, paying the bills and working with the HAFF bookkeeper in posting donations. She also works with field staff to produce posts for the HAFF Facebook page and answers requests from HAFF supporters.

The Davises - Guatemala

The Davis family lives and serves in the Central American country of Guatemala. Since 2006, Levi and Jackie Davis have focused on serving the people of Guatemala through construction, outreach, education, and local church planting. The primary focus of their ministry is evangelism through construction. However, God has been using them in many ways to serve the people in Guatemala and the kingdom.

The Lord has used the Davis family in unique ways to share the Gospel in Guatemala. Since the beginning of their ministry, Levi’s background in engineering and construction has been used to assist in the construction and renovation of many homes, churches, schools, and facilities throughout Guatemala. The construction process offers a physical way to show God’s love and gives an excellent platform to share his word. The need for shelter is never-ending in Guatemala where earthquakes, landslides, and even volcanos are a common occurrence.

Currently, the Davis family is building a center to construct prefabricated homes. With this new facility, they will be able to construct safe buildings quickly and spend more time in the field teaching God’s Word to the people. The building system will be available to other missions and churches to help God’s people and to reach those who do not know the Lord.

When the Davis family first arrived in Guatemala, they had one daughter. Today they have a total of four children. Jackie has been involved in many ministries including women’s Bible study groups, quilting groups, and personal counseling. She currently teaches classes at the local Christian Academy where two of their children attend. Her volunteer position helps the local community by teaching about the love of Christ.

The Lord is faithful and has used the Davis family to grow the kingdom and change lives in Central America. For the Davis family, there are good days and not-so-good days. However, the joy of the Lord is constant.
